During an initial day in the mayor's office, Zohran Mamdani committed to “transform” the metropolis, promising “a fresh chapter” and an ambitious beginning to his administration.

A Groundbreaking Mayor

The young political star, who just a year ago remained a virtually unknown state assemblyman, has become the city's first mayor born in Africa. He also made history by being the first to be sworn in using the Islamic holy text.

“A moment like this comes rarely and even more uncommon is it that the people themselves whose hold the controls for transformation,” Mamdani remarked.

Defying counsel to be modest, the mayor was emphatic: “I will do no such thing. The only expectation I seek to redefine is that of modest goals. Beginning today we will lead with courage and vision.”

Governing with Socialist Ideals

Mamdani explicitly affirmed his core beliefs. “I was elected as a socialist leader and I will govern as one. I will not forsake my ideals for worry of being called radical,” he said to rapturous applause.

The ceremony was a two-part event, beginning with a late-night oath-taking in a disused subway station. He was officially inaugurated on the steps of city hall by political ally Bernie Sanders, who praised Mamdani's election as a victory over powerful interests.

An Ambitious Blueprint

Mamdani now begins one of the most challenging jobs in American politics, with a platform promising:

• Universal childcare
• Free buses
• A rent freeze for approximately 1 million households
• A experiment of city-run grocery stores

The estimated $10 billion expense of these initiatives may pose a hurdle to finance. Mamdani has pledged to tax more heavily the wealthiest New Yorkers and corporations. However, as a city subject to the state government, he will require the cooperation of Governor Kathy Hochul.

Navigating Political Dynamics

The new mayor also faces skepticism from some members of the Jewish community alarmed by his past stances regarding Israel. Tensions were revealed during the transition when a senior aide resigned over offensive past tweets.

Mamdani has moved to ease these concerns by convincing Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch to remain, avoiding the optics of losing a top Jewish official.

On the national stage, former President Donald Trump has labeled Mamdani a “socialist” and warned of withholding federal funding. Despite this, a recent meeting between the two was reportedly surprisingly cordial.

The Fundamental Tests of Governing

In the end, New York mayors are judged on their ability in delivering essential functions: sanitation, curbing the rodent problem, repairing roadways, and making sure reliable subway operation.

Outgoing Mayor Eric Adams highlighted his administration's anti-crime efforts, pointing to historically low numbers of murders and shootings in 2025, with 301 homicides reported.

As his term begins, Mamdani and his wife will move from their Queens apartment to the stately Gracie Mansion. The outgoing mayor offered a unusual warning about a supposed resident spirit in the home, which reportedly only haunts those who do not act to “do right by the city.”

Mamdani ended his remarks with a direct statement: “The work has only just begun.”
