Zak Crawley Unaware of Stokes' Provocative 'Frail Characters' Remarks

England opening batter Zak Crawley suggested he had no knowledge of statements from captain Ben Stokes about the team environment not being "those lacking fortitude".

The all-rounder delivered this message in several interviews in the wake of his team's loss in the second match of the Ashes versus Australia earlier this month.

In the lead-up to the third Test, where the visitors now face defeat with a match to spare, the captain stated he had let his message to "circulate freely" within the playing group.

"I have completed all the talking over the past two days that I required," remarked Stokes.

But, after Crawley made 85 on the fourth day in the third Test, he commented: "I didn't see that."

"I wasn't actively searching for it. We take anything stated in the press with a pinch of salt," Crawley continued.

Raw Conversations and Consistent Messaging

Stokes made the "weak men" observation after his side suffered a loss in the second Test to fall 2-0 down.

The team afterwards took a holiday to a Queensland resort in the gap between the second and the upcoming Tests.

Prior to this match, Stokes revealed his team had held "honest" talks and he had urged them to "show a bit of dog" in their battle to stay in contention in the series.

Yet, the Kent batsman stated the guidance from the captain and coach McCullum had remained in line with their prior tenure in charge.

"The atmosphere has been very positive, the same as always," noted the opener. "The focus is just trying to be optimistic, play our way, with lots of freedom. It felt like we were capable of something special entering this game."

The Hosts On the Verge of Rapid Series Victory

Crawley's wicket on day four came during a decisive three-wicket burst by Australia spinner Nathan Lyon.

The spinner's three wickets in 20 deliveries – including the wickets of Harry Brook and Ben Stokes – left England 207-6 in pursuit of a daunting total of 435.

This means, Australia require just four more wickets on Sunday's last day to move to an insurmountable 3-0 lead after three Tests.

Defeat would prolong the English team's drought in this country to 18 consecutive matches and ensure a fourth successive away Ashes defeat.

This series is set to be decided in only eleven days of play – with England fell the initial matches in rapid time each.

The last time 1921, when the Australians completed a series win in the UK in eight days, has the outcome of the urn been decided more swiftly. The hosts have also triumphed in eleven days on two other occasions in the 21st century.

"It's disheartening," admitted Crawley. "Our goal was to regain the Ashes and we're staring down the barrel now."

"There remains plenty to play for and we'll definitely view it like that," Crawley added.

"The challenge has been difficult. They're a formidable side. It was always going to be tough touring here against them. They were the favourites and have demonstrated their quality."

Ollie Pope's Place In Question

Although the opener's performance in the third Test probably answers doubts about his short-term future in the England team, Ollie Pope looks under immense pressure for his position in the Melbourne Test starting December 26th.

The Surrey batsman was out for 17 runs in the team's second knock on day four, adding to his modest returns against Australia.

In sixteen Ashes knocks, Pope has failed to score a half-century and boasts an average of 17.62.

Only one other English batsman since 1900 – Dennis Amiss – has played as many times in the top six in the Ashes and returned a poorer average.

But, Crawley said any suggestion his teammate is being scrutinised originates with "you guys" – meaning the journalists – "and not within the team."

"The squad is fully aware of his considerable talent," said Crawley. "Ollie has enjoyed a productive year to be frank."

"He has produced some really good knocks. It is noise from the outside. There is no discussion like that on Ollie amongst the players," he finished.
