"Do you know when you'll be speaking to the band?" an inquiry arrives. "I wanted to ask if I can become their newest bandmate."

However, there remains one problem: I also desires to be Haim's newest recruit. Furthermore, we are far from alone. A host of celebrated fans have publicly petitioned for the honor.

It's clear an irresistible appeal is happening. The siblings Este, Danielle and Alana launched their path performing shows at local delicatessens with their family. Now they're repeated Grammy Award nominees.

Similar to the most iconic bands, they're a close gang. Their videos often depict them walking in harmony down the avenues of Los Angeles. During performances, they perform with such pure happiness you find yourself thinking, "I want to be part of that, too."

"The amount of times on tour that fans came up to us and said, 'After your show, I got a guitar'," says Alana, the youngest of the Haim siblings. "That's the greatest compliment. It is a prize in itself. We have succeeded if we can inspire people to make music."

"Therefore everyone gets an invitation to be the next member of Haim."

Award Milestone

The band are connecting from home, where they're resting up after an major tour in promoting their fourth album, I Quit.

They're right now processing the news it's been in the running for Best Rock Album at the Grammy Awards – with Haim the pioneering all-female band ever in contention for the trophy.

"I tune into the nominations every year, so it almost feels like a surreal movie when your name is called," notes Alana. "I needed to phone my sisters to say, 'Did I hear this correctly or am I hallucinating'?"

The significance of the honor resonates with the sisters.

"We really set out to make a rock album this time, so it's a major milestone," continues Alana. "However we're just appreciative for the women that came before us."

Emotional Upheaval and Laughter

The album came out of a phase of emotional upheaval. All three sisters were single, and the music inhabits that odd in-between place where you're relieved to be free, but not yet ready to move on.

The lyrics detail breakups and goodbyes. The sisters seek love, but not the specific love they've got. You can hear them working out in real life who they want to be.

"That's a perfect description, yes," responds Danielle. "I Quit is kind of like a personal statement. You have to actively work on blocking the outside opinions and saying, 'I don't give what people think'."

Evolution of Music

That developed toughness required a new sound – more organic and direct than any of the music the band had done before.

For Danielle, who co-produced the album, that started with the drums.

"The drum sound is such a nuanced thing, and I focus so intensely about it," she states.

"'Journey of the drum sound' will be the title of our memoir," jokes Alana. "I always say, our albums cannot begin until we find the right drum sound."

Experiences and Collective Camaraderie

The band's candor inspired the album's rollout, where the sisters disclosed some of their romantic tales.

A former partner broke up with Este over a health consideration. Alana recalled a story of travelling to spend New Year's Eve with someone, only to receive a high five at midnight.

"Experiencing these setbacks, you just feel like there's only darkness," says Alana. "Therefore to be able to find humor in those stories and have them tell you even crazier stories, it's therapeutic."

An Assured Path

You can clearly sense a shift in the band. Today, Haim are more assured of their position in the music world.

They're festival headliners, with chart-topping albums and an global fan base.

Yet the band will always be their top priority.

"Me and my siblings have been making music since I was a young child," says Alana. "It feels as if no alternative that we were supposed to do. And I'm really fortunate we've reached this point and we're still going strong."
